“Want to get better at fly fishing? Get better at fly casting. Want to get better at fly casting? You’re in the right place.”

-Mary Ann Dozer, Professional Fly Casting Coach

Fly fishing isn’t particularly complicated. To borrow a line from the late John Gierach, you’re standing in a river waving a stick. But as any beginning fly angler will tell you, it can be maddeningly difficult. I’m here to demystify the most mystified skill in fly fishing: the fly cast.

Hi, I’m Mary Ann. I’ve been fly fishing for 30 years, was a licensed guide for 14 years, and for the last 20 years I’ve been teaching and coaching fly casting. I love fly fishing. About the only thing I love as much as fishing is teaching. Whether you’re brand new to the sport or have been waving a stick for years, I can teach you how to elevate your cast - and ensure you have a lot more fun fly fishing in the process.

It’s Nice to Meet You.

Why fly casting is the single most important skill you can improve on.

Fly Casting has a singular purpose - to present your fly with accuracy and finesse in order to fool an unwitting fish into your clutches. Fact: There’s a direct correlation between how well you cast and how many fish you catch.  There’s lots to learn in fly fishing - reading rivers, identifying insects, timing the tides - but fly casting is the only aspect where, given proper instruction, you can see constant improvement. And while a hired guide can help match the hatch and tell you where to aim your fly, when it’s time to catch a fish, you have only yourself to rely on to cast that rod.

Speaking of constant improvement, let’s discuss my specialty - virtual coaching and instruction. How do I coach and teach virtually? With two important tools: video conferencing (thanks Covid) and leading-edge video diagnostics. Using specialized tools, both you and I can see the minute details of your fly cast. This allows me to diagnose your cast and help you improve your mechanics. The only specialized tools you’ll need? A phone, laptop, and internet connection.

I Can Meet You Wherever You Are.

I’m located in Sisters, Oregon, about two and a half hours south of Portland. I’ve met with and coached countless fly anglers from the area. You say you don’t live anywhere near Sisters? Not a problem. As discussed above, I regularly conduct online virtual coaching sessions with folks from around the world.

Meeting you where you are applies to your skill level as well. I've coached fly anglers at every level. Are you brand new to the sport? I’ll show you a frustration-free path to becoming a skilled fly fisherman or woman. Have you been fly fishing for decades? I’m here to show you that there are still new tricks to learn, and there’s always room to improve your cast. If you’re about to go on a guided trip, there really is no better investment than some focused coaching. Why not sign up for a session today?

A Few Words of Encouragement

I did an in-person session with Mary Ann, and man, the payoff was immediate. It’s so helpful to get feedback like, right as you’re casting. I was able to make small adjustments and see improvements to my cast right away. Awesome!

I was initially skeptical about online coaching and found the video portion intimidating.  To my surprise, the video turned out to be the most beneficial part of the instruction. I highly recommend getting online coaching with Mary Ann.

I’m not usually a fan of virtual classes, but I joined Good2Great Fly Casting because I trust Mary Ann’s dedication to coaching all anglers at all levels. The class surpassed my expectations. The video reviews made it easy to spot and fix my bad habits. Now, I handle windy days with confidence, hit targets more accurately, and have a lot more fun on the water.
